Private Patrick McKeever

 

The background of this man is not known, but it is possible that he was the Patrick McKeever born at Craigs, Ballymoney, County Antrim, one of at least five children of farmer and labourer John McKeever and his wife Peggy (Margaret) (née Laverty). At the time of the 1911 Census he was living at Craigs with his widowed mother, three siblings and a nephew.

McKeever enlisted in the North Irish Horse at Belfast on 18 August 1916 (No.2235). He was described as being 5' 11" tall, with a fresh complexion and fair hair, and marks on his face. He gave his age as 30, his birthplace as Finroy [Finvoy], Antrim, and his occupation as a farmer.

McKeever was reported to have deserted from the regiment's reserve base at Antrim on 8 September 1916, less than a month after he had enlisted. It is not known if he was subsequently apprehended or returned to duty.
